22 October 2026
NSW Government guidance says card networks and payment providers may introduce no-surcharge rules from 1 October 2026. It identifies networks including eftpos, Mastercard, Visa and American Express, and notes that the relevant networks and providers administer and enforce their rules.
This is more precise than assuming every fee on every invoice is covered by one blanket rule. The guidance distinguishes card-payment surcharges from other charges and says businesses must provide clear, accurate pricing information.
When booking vehicle work, ask for the total quoted price, what it includes and the available payment methods. If an estimate may change after inspection, ask how additional work will be approved and documented. Keep the final invoice alongside the agreed scope of work.
If a card fee appears unexpectedly, ask the business and payment provider which rule applies before assuming the charge is valid. NSW guidance also warns against disguising a card surcharge as an administration or handling fee. The practical aim is a clear total and an explanation of any difference between the quote and the amount requested.
